10 GHz Rain-Scatter QSO VE3KH - VE3WCC, 2024 June VHF Contest
Against all odds, I succeeded in completing this Rain-Scatter contact between VE3KH and our West Carleton Amateur Radio Club station VE3WCC during the 2024 ARRL June VHF Contest. This time, we were in FN15vj, at the Kinburn Community Centre. Following a phone call from Kevin VE3KH, I quickly set up the dish on the backyard septic field (!), with little hope that this 370 km link would work, considering the dense tree line about 500 feet in front of me. All I could hope for is that the V-shape opening in the treeline would align with his location (I was so in rush between two rain showers that forgot to take pictures). As you can hear, we had a good copy. Radio waves are often unpredictable!
Equipment used at VE3WCC: 22-inch prime focus dish on tripod, with 3W TX power, as seen in this video, and documented in the 25-part series of videos. IF rig used is Icom IC-705 (2m IF). Series of videos on my 10GHz system: ( ua-cam.com/play/PLd6VW5EHf22c9uXjNXhYmm_iCQm0ZrN54.html
Equipment used at VE3KH: 24-inch prime focus dish up on a tower, with ~20W TX power.

My Bike Rack HF Mobile Mount

    When I was a kid in MI back in the 1960's I would listen to CHU for hours on my shortwave. I was a country kid living between a corn field and a wheat field with a pig pen across the road from the driveway. CHU (and all of SW) was a reminder that there was a whole different world out there somewhere beyond those fields and that pig pen, a world with technology, transistors, paved roads, remote controls, air conditioning, and magic. BTW, CHU sounds almost exactly as I remember it from 60 years ago, (I'm certain they haven't changed the English voice recording,) although I think they added the French announcement. When you're in your mid 70's some things fade.

    Gr8 job! Looks that microwaves are the area that some DIY is mandatory. HF, VHF, UHF is available now by quite cheap TRXes so there is no impuls to build DIY staff... But even DIY TRX for HF and then do QSO by that - give me more pleasure than use ready to use device. Just started play with microwaves too this year and it's a lot of experiments and learning on front of me. I think the worst is avability or/and price of measurement devices for such high frequencies. Greetings from Poland /SP6JAP/

    Where can one find a calculator to figure the distance the feed horn sits on dish for different frequencies?

    • @VE2ZAZ
      @VE2ZAZ 2 місяці тому

      That distance is not a function of frequency. The focal point position is a function of dish geometry. Simple measurements of the dish and parabola calculations will yield the exact the focal point distance from the bottom of the dish. Here is one calculator: www.calctown.com/calculators/parabolic-dish-antenna

Here in Europe I have access to QO 100 satellite (2.4Ghz uplink, 10GHz downlink) so I decided to build upconverter by myself starting microwave journey.. very interesting. I think we need more satellites to make microwave activities more popular.

    awesome! what coupling cap did you use at the input exactly? also why no coupling cap on the output? it is DC coupled and can influence the bias of the second stage. and how did you measure the input VSWR? thanks

    • @VE2ZAZ
      @VE2ZAZ 4 місяці тому

      5 pf or so. Not critical since it does not take much capacitance to offer a low impedance path at 10GHz. The transverter has an input coupling cap, so no need for an output cap on the LNA. Howver, I did later add a coupling cap on the output as well, so I could add an external attenuator for testing purpose. I tested the VSWR with a generator and directional coupler, same technique as with the WR-90 to SMA transition.

    all chinese made synthesizer boards use the same regulator for AVdd and DVdd just by adding a simple filter. Consequently the layout is also poor and couples the digital to analog path. even some of their cheap bench top signal gens use the same design which is very wrong. DVdd and AVdd must use separate regulators and the layout for DGND and AGND (even though they are electrically connected) must be carefully separated to minimize coupling. of course all of that adds to the cost. AVdd also needs a lot better filtering of course.

    • @VE2ZAZ

      Absolutely. Now here in my application I am quite sure it is going to be fine. If this becomes an issue, I will consider redesigning, following Analog Devices recommendations. Thanks!
